Nellotie Chastain was born in Grand Rapids, Mi. living there for the first five years of her life. Reared in Leslie County, Kentucky. The mountains were always her favorite, along with splashing, fishing, and swimming in Greasy Creek. She lived in Leslie County, being educated about life in the mountains, by living it. Education happened in one-room school houses for normal school subjects. Learning about politics and government came from the books, listening to the older folks, and from visiting the county courthouse. Mary Breckinridge and her deep compassion for the children and women of the area was part of the life Nellotie lived. As an adult, after falling in love with a Hoosier, Nellotie moved to Mitchell, Indiana. Astronaut Gus Grissom, close in age to Nellotie’s husband, was born and reared in Mitchell. Later, Gus became a vital person in the space program before his untimely death. Always interested in geography, Nellotie Chastain researched numerous places in the United States. Especially, during the active time of the space program. A lifetime avid reader, coupled with a considerably large imagination, how best could Nellotie Chastain use knowledge mixed with memories to bring enjoyment to others? You are experiencing it.
